For the past 12 years PC videogame Entropia Universe has offered one of the largest Massively Multiplayer Online Real Cash Economy (MMORCE) experiences in the world. Players have been able to enjoy this sci-fi experience, travelling to a wide range of planets with varied gameplay, using a universal real cash system. Today the company behind the title has announced plans to fully integrate support for virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMDs) into the title.
Entropia Universe will be receiving support for both the second development kit (DK2) for the Oculus Rift as well as Valve’s SteamVR system, meaning the HTC Vive will also be integrated into the title. Players will be able to visit a diverse set of worlds, including NEVERDIE Studios’ ROCKtropia with its movie-themed attractions and other such planets, in VR. In this sense, Entropia Universe will provide a platform for creators to monetise VR content.
“With Facebook’s Acquisition of Oculus and Valve producing its own immersive experience with HTC, Virtual Reality is on the threshold of becoming the great entertainment medium of the new millennium,” said David Simmonds, Entropia Universe AB’s head of business development.
